Thanos Mikroutsikos was born in Patra in 1947. He started to study music at a very young age. He studied mathematics at the University of Athens and also music theory, counterpoint, fugue and composition with Y. A. Papaioannou.

His extensive work is informed by many music influences and often by jazz. He has collaborated with many well-known jazz artists such as Yiorgos Zikoyiannis, Nikos Touliatos, Yiorgos Fakanas, Takis Farazis and more). From 1986 to 1990 he was the artistic director of the Patras International Festival, which hosted musicians such as Keith Jarrett, Al Di Meola, Hermeto Pascoal, Cecil Taylor and Sakis Papadimitriou.

In 2003 in collaboration with the famous vibraphone player Gary Burton, he released the album "Music Stories".

He died in 2019.
