About us

Jazz Library is a digital collection of the discography, artists and groups of the Greek jazz scene that aims to provide 'all about' information in one site. It covers a period from the 60s to the present day, with all the albums that are published in Greece, Cyprus or abroad by Greek and Cypriot artists or foreigners who live in Greece or Cyprus. It also contains jazz radio shows, books and other publications, comic books and art that is relevant to this music scene. Initially, Jazz Library was created on an online database (Omeka) and published in June 2021. Soon, in 2023, it was developed, by Runaway, to its own site for better and more effective use of the information it contains.

The idea

In June 2021 we released Jazz Library inspired by the music and the artists of the ever flourishing jazz scene in Greece and Cyprus. Our aim was to create a digital site with all the discography on improvisational music in our country. It begun by an idea of Vangelis Aragiannis, a long time jazz fan and reviewer, who observed that such a database was missing, therefore there was a need for a one “place” with the albums and the artists of Greek jazz, so we named it the library of jazz, or Jazz Library.

The making of the project was an interesting and almost full time job for a team of people that lasted ten months, hosted on Omeka. In April 2023 the site was modernized and technically rebuilt on a new base so now it is autonomous and friendlier to the user.

We hope it is useful for everyone wanting to find more about jazz music in Greece and Cyprus, for the students and researchers and it is a tribute to the artists and creators themselves who make albums despite all the difficulties the may face.

Besides music, Jazz Library has a strong connection and interaction with other forms of art such as literature, comics and painting. It also contains radio programs and contemporary digital collections on music and other topics.

Jazz Library team

We are a team of people coming from different backgrounds yet we have a lot of things in common, especially our love for beauty, nature, arts and jazz music. We have worked together for the design and construction of Jazz Library, a complete site and database on the Greek jazz music scene, that we hope you find pleasantly useful and ever developing. Last but not least, we want to help the dissemination of this music scene on Greek jazz.
