Christos Barbas
Christos Barbas started playing and studying music when he was 7 years old. The first instrument he started playing was baroque recorder, later he studied piano, cello, baroqe music, harmony and countrpoint. He has a degree in Musicology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a master's degree in Ethnomusicology from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London.
Since 2003, he has focused his interest in studying the ney, the clasical Othoman and Soufi music along with Balkan and Greek music with acclaimed teachers from Greece, Bulgary and Turkey. At the same time he studies and plays traditional instruments from various countries (kaval, bansouri, irish whistles, bagpipe and more) mixing the genres, from ethnic music to imrovisation and jazz.
Crhistos Barbas composes music (for contemporary dance and theater, cinema etc.) and has released 8 albums until today with the groups Yeden, Neda, Magnanimus Trio, Murat and Peppe Frana.
Also, he collaborates with outstanding musicians in the world of traditional and contemporary music as Ross Daly & Labyrinth, Zohar Fresco, Murat Aydemir, Efrén López & Abracadabra, Evgenios Voulgaris, Peppe Frana, Miloke Mandarini Quartet, Maria Farantouri, Anja Lechner and Thomas Strønen, participating in concerts and recordings with labels as AN Music, Felmay IT and ECM Records.
He has taught ney, kaval, improvisation and composition at the Dept. of Traditional Music of the Technical University of Epirus and at the Dept. of Musical studies of the University of Macedonia. Nowadays, he teaches in many workshops and he is the artistic director of the Labyrinth Catalunya music workshops.
