Avaton were forme in 1988 by Yiannis Papadakis and Panayiotis Xydias. Initially they were joined by multi-instrumentalist Nikos Grapsas, who later left the band.

They infused eastern traditional and byzantine music and ancient Greek poetry with jazz and rock influences.

Their debut homonymous album was released in 1991 and was succeeded by three more recordings.
