Stratos Vougas
Saxophonist Stratos Vougas was born in Athens in 1967. He started his musical studies at the age of five, with piano lessons both one-to-one as well as at the Athens Conservatory. After completing his classical piano studies, he turned his interest in jazz and started studying saxophone.
From 1993 to 1995 he lived in New York, where he gained invaluable experience collaborating with established jazz musicians.
Upon his return to Greece he had a series of concerts in various Athens jazz clubs as well as throughout the country.
Among the musicians he worked with were trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, drummer Vincent Ector, drummer Johnny Vidacovich, drummer Phoenix Rivera, bassist Olivier Gatto, bassist James Lewis, drummer Steve Philips, and vocalists Carla Cook, Deborah Davis, Kysia Bostic, Jann Parker and Georgia Brown.
In 1997, as a member of the Jazz Crew group, he recorded with Makis Ablianitis the album Makis Ablianitis & the Jazz Crew. His first personal album "Breaking Loose" was released in 1997 and was succeeded by "A Tribute to Hank Mobley" in 1999.
