Nikos Vargiamidis
Nikos Vargiamidis started studying drums in 1992, at the age of fourteen, at the Contemporary Conservatory of Thessaloniki. A few years later he started performing with various groups at concerts and festivals all over Greece (such as the International Jazz Festival of Patras). At the same time he was a member of the house band Sporos.
In 1999, he continued his studies with a scholarship, at Berklee College of Music, in Boston.There, he studied with some of the biggest names in music, such as John Ramsey, Jackie Santos, Yoron Israel, Jamey Haddad, Kenwood Dennard, and others.
Beyond his studies he was very active in Boston’s local music scene and also he was a member of the Contemporary Greek Music Ensemble that was performing in Boston University, in association with the Greek Institute. From 2001 to 2004 he was teaching drums (Lexington School of Music, Belmond Music School) and in 2002 he became a member of the afro-pop group Kumina, with which he performed for two years in Boston and toured in the USA.
In 2004 he returned to Thessaloniki, where he performed with great artists of the jazz scene as Takis Barberis, Milcho Leviev, Tony Lakatos, Guataca, Kostas Maginas, Dimitris Vassilakis, Dimos Dimitriadis, Chico Freeman, Dimitris Tsakas, Evi Siamanda, Christos Rafailides and Peter Sanchev and others.
He is also a member of the latin group Aroma Caribe and co-founder of the funk band Hardgroove Quartet. Alongside his performances he continues to work in the studio as well as teaching drums at Philippos Nakas Conservatory in Thessaloniki.
